Have you received your monocyte lab results? You can find out what your values mean here.
Monocytes are part of the white blood cells(leukocytes) and part of your immune system. In the body, they develop into so-called macrophages, which eat and kill intruders such as viruses and bacteria. Elevated laboratory values for monocytes indicate inflammation and infections.
Abstract
- Your body needs monocytes to fight pathogens.
- Elevated monocyte levels indicate infections and certain forms of cancer.
- Extremely low monocyte levels can occur in immune diseases such as HIV.
Normal values for monocytes?
The standard values differ according to gender and age. The most important values:
| Age group | Female | Male |
| Children 6-12 years | 4,2-11,3 % | 4,2-12,3 % |
| Adolescents 12-17 years | 4,1-10,9 % | 4,4-12,3 % |
| Adults aged 18 and over | 4,7-12,5 % | 5,3-12,2 % |
The monocyte values (i.e. their proportion of white blood cells) determined after the blood sample is taken provide information about various diseases.
Causes of elevated monocyte levels
In medicine, elevated monocyte levels are referred to as monocytosis. As a rule, this is good news: in the healing phase of an acute infection, the levels are typically elevated because the immune system is working flat out to fight the pathogens.
However, monocytosis can also indicate serious and as yet undiagnosed infectious diseases:
- Bacterial infections (e.g. syphilis or tuberculosis)
- Infections with tropical pathogens (e.g. malaria)
- Autoimmune diseases (e.g. Crohn’s disease)
- Certain cancers
Extremely high values indicate bone marrow diseases (myelodysplasia) in which the production of blood cells is disturbed. In this case, the doctor will recommend a bone marrow examination.
Causes of low monocyte levels
Low values(monocytopenia) are rare and often undetectable, as the few monocytes present are difficult to recognize. The causes include
- Autoimmune diseases such as HIV
- Bone marrow damage
- Metastases that attack the bone marrow
Therapy options
As monocytosis and monocytopenia are part of one disease, the doctor will treat the underlying disease. In the case of monocytopenia, you can help to increase the formation of new white blood cells yourself by eating a healthy diet with fruit and vegetables.
