Great. Super easy, no fuss. It saves a lot of time and hassle around doctor's appointments. I'll be using it more often now.
You don't have to leave your bed when you're already feeling unwell, and you don't infect anyone on the way to the doctor or in the waiting room. I think that's great!

Diabetes Mellitus Guide
Abstract:
- Diabetes is a chronic metabolic disease in which the sugar metabolism is disturbed. This is why the disease is also known colloquially as “diabetes”.
- If left untreated, diabetes can lead to serious consequential damage such as metabolic disorders, a heart attack or stroke.
- There are different types of the disease, the most common being type I and type II diabetes.
- The first symptoms are, for example, tiredness, an increased and strong urge to urinate or an increased feeling of thirst.
- Causes include obesity or genetic predisposition.
- Regardless of the type, there is an insulin deficiency or insulin resistance in the body that needs to be compensated for.
- Depending on the type of disease, a healthy diet and exercise may be sufficient. Otherwise, oral antidiabetic drugs in the form of tablets must be taken or insulin injected
Definition
Diabetes is a chronic metabolic disease. The sugar supplied through food cannot be absorbed into the body’s cells, which causes the sugar level in the blood to rise. If this is permanently elevated, vessels and organs can suffer serious damage.

Symptoms
People with diabetes often suffer from:
- strong urge to urinate
- constant thirst
- Tiredness
- dry skin
- frequent infections
- Acetone odor in the mouth
If the blood sugar level is too high, the body tries to excrete the excess sugar via the urine. This results in a strong urge to urinate and a constant feeling of thirst.
Type l diabetes develops rapidly and can cause such severe symptoms within one to two weeks that a doctor must be consulted immediately.
Type ll diabetes often has no or only minimal symptoms. In most cases, the diagnosis is only made when the patient is being treated for another illness.
Type l and type ll
There are several types of diabetes. The most common are types l and ll.

Blood glucose tests for at home
These regulatory mechanisms are very sensitive. If they do not work properly or fail completely, glucose can accumulate in the blood. The blood sugar level rises. This alone does not cause any symptoms – we don’t even notice it. However, if the blood sugar level remains high for a long time, this can cause damage. This is known as “ diabetes mellitus”.
There are two values that are important with regard to blood sugar:
- Glucose level in the blood: provides information about the current situation. This value is very high after eating, for example, but then drops again quickly thanks to the release of insulin.
- HbA1c value (long-term blood glucose): allows conclusions to be drawn about the average blood glucose values over the last three months.
Treatment
A simple blood test can be used to clarify whether the corresponding symptoms are actually due to diabetes mellitus. Depending on the type of disease, there are various treatment options:
Diabetes type l:
In intensified insulin therapy (ICT), patients inject a long-acting insulin once or twice a day. An extra dose of fast-acting insulin is administered in addition to meals.
Those affected must regularly check their blood sugar and estimate the carbohydrate content of their meal in order to be able to calculate the sufficient amount of insulin. A training course, which is held after diagnosis, teaches the necessary basics.
Diabetes type ll:
With type ll diabetes, lifestyle changes and medication are often sufficient at the beginning. Patients should:
- move a lot
- Reduce excess weight
- Eat a healthy and varied diet
The disease can be cured if these tips are followed. However, type II diabetes usually continues to progress. Usually until medication is no longer sufficient and those affected have to start injecting insulin to regulate their blood sugar levels.
Diabetes and alcohol
A diagnosis of diabetes used to mean a strict ban on alcohol, but today doctors are less concerned about small amounts. The main danger with alcohol is that it inhibits the release of sugar from the liver. This can result in hypoglycemia, which can lead to unconsciousness and even heart attacks in older people.
Diabetic nerve damage can be intensified by alcohol. As beer, wine and the like are very high in calories, these drinks should only be consumed in moderation, as body weight can be a decisive factor in diabetes. Women should drink a maximum of 10 grams of alcohol per day (e.g. 125 ml of wine or 250 ml of beer); men a maximum of 20 g of alcohol (e.g. 250 ml of wine or 500 ml of beer).
Make sure that you:
- Provide your body with sufficient energy. Consume slow-acting carbohydrates, e.g. unsalted nuts.
- Always carry your meter with you. If your blood sugar level drops rapidly, you can counteract this with glucose or a meal.
- The risk of hypoglycaemia is greatest during sleep, as it usually goes unnoticed. It is recommended that you take a blood glucose test before going to bed. You should also set an alarm clock to check your blood sugar levels again after a few hours.
Prevention
Type ll diabetes can be prevented! Plenty of exercise and a balanced, healthy diet are the basis. In addition, constant negative stress should be avoided, as this causes blood sugar levels to rise and remain constantly high.
